4 Reasons to ‘Live Ole Miss!’

From the Department of Student Housing

Encouraging your students to live on the University of Mississippi campus after their freshman year allows them to be a part of what it truly means to “Live Ole Miss!” Living on campus offers many advantages that we think are important to discuss with your students before they decide to make the move to an off-campus residence.

Live Conveniently
Living on campus allows your students to be near their classes, recreational facilities, dining options and, of course, game day! They have easy access to the university’s bus routes, which take them wherever they need to go on campus and in the community. They are also closer to a variety of study spaces and tutoring opportunities. This convenient access to academic resources helps your students succeed. According to research done at the university, students who live on campus are more likely to graduate in four years.

Live Safely
The safety of our residents is our top priority. Your students are surrounded by a plethora of people who are here to make sure they stay safe, including the University Police Department, their community coordinator, and their community assistant living on their floor with them! The front desks of all our buildings are open 24 hours a day when buildings are open, and UPD patrols regularly to make sure buildings are secure and your students are safe and can receive whatever help they might need.

Live Confidently
Your students have the ability to foster intrapersonal self-esteem as part of a residential community. They have the opportunity to make a diverse group of friends who will add to their overall college experience. They can become involved in their Residence Hall Association, opening them up to leadership opportunities. Through the Department of Student Housing, they are able to take advantage of travel opportunities such as Destination Unknown and Alternative Break, which also allows them to build community with people from other areas of campus and make lifelong connections.

Live Affordably
At first glance, living off campus may seem more affordable. However, when factoring in additional costs (rent, utilities, cable, internet, furniture and maintenance), living on campus can be more affordable. All of this is included in one cost and billed directly to your students’ bursar account twice a year – that means financial aid is directly applied!

The application for sophomore and upperclassman housing for the 2021-22 academic year opened Feb. 1. If you or your students have any questions about life on campus or the types of residence halls we offer for sophomores, juniors and seniors, feel free to email housingma@olemiss.edu or call us at 662-915-1091.
